Just three days after the Coppell Cowboys soccer team was eliminated from the postseason, the Cowgirls suffered the same fate, falling to Grapevine in an overtime shootout to end their hopes for a state title.
The Cowgirls, who beat Plano West 1-0 on Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs, were considered a legitimate contender for the state title before the second round loss. Coppell won District 7-5A this season, going 12-1-1 against divisional opponents in 2011.
Grapevine scored the first goal of the game and entered halftime with a 1-0 lead. The Cowgirls responded minutes into the second half, however, as junior Lindsey Meyer scored the equalizing goal for Coppell.
From there, neither team was able to score throughout regualtion or overtime. This led to a best of five dribble-up shootout, which Grapevine was able to win 4 goals to 2.
The loss was tough for a couple team that will lose a number of seniors that led Coppell to the state title in 2009. That said, it was an impressive season for the Cowgirls overall, as they went 20-4-2 in all games in 2011.
