October 6th marks the 26 annual National Night Out. The police department encourages people to participate with neighborhood block parties to increase community spirit and foster better relationships with police.
National Night out began as a project by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984. That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated with more than 2.5 million participants. Last year, over 15,000 communities in all states, plus Canada and US territories and military bases, participated, with a grand total of more than 37 million participants.
