Different spirit groups brings support to CHS

Abby Drake

At every Coppell basketball, football, hockey, baseball and lacrosse game the roar from the crowd fills the entire area due the outstanding school spirit that Coppell High School holds. In order for girls at CHS to show their spirit while supporting their favorite sports, spirit groups have been created for each individual sport.

Diamond Dolls, Sideline Psychos, Lax Lovers, Hockey Honeys and Basketball Babes are groups designed to gather girls at each game to support the teams.  For each group, every player on the team roster is assigned between two to four girls who wear a T-shirt representing the team, the players name and their number.

Aside from attending the games and showing support for their player, assigned to them by the group’s leader, the girls often will bring their boys good luck treats and gifts.

The cheerleaders do not cheer for every sport and neither hockey nor lacrosse are not considered a part of UIL Coppell High School athletics; so it is important that these teams get the of support of these groups.

Each group is different with different names, different shirts and are run in a different way, but they are all aimed toward the same goal: making every team and player feel encouraged.

Sideline Psychos

To match their rowdy behavior of the CHS varsity boys soccer team, a spirit group was named the Sideline Psychos.  This group is the largest in size, giving each guy between three to four girls from the sophomore, junior and senior classes.

Every year, the soccer team produces t-shirts for their fans and themselves, and this year those T-shirts were neon yellow.  The leaders of Sideline Psychos this year, seniors Keely Leonard and Allie Winkle decided to make the group shirts neon yellow as well to match the players.

“We chose such a bright color because they make the girls stand out at school and they look really cool in the stands when the other team looks across at Coppell’s fans,” Winkle said.

Basketball Babes

Although the cheerleaders are at many of the varsity basketball games, their support does not match that of football games.  The basketball team, however, is equal in importance and drive and deserves a crowd with the same enthusiasm.

“Basketball Babes is very important because we make the boys feel supported and help the student crowd grow,” Group leader senior Cate McMinn said.

The Basketball Babes are at every home game are currently representing their players at the playoff games.

Diamond Dolls

The CHS varsity baseball team’s cheering section has named themselves Diamond Dolls as a pun to the baseball diamond in the center of the field. This specific group is different than the other groups because it is only made up of senior girls, with the exception of junior, sophomore and freshmen girlfriends.

“Diamond Dolls is a unique group because it is exclusive for seniors and has been an important tradition for senior girls for many years,” group leader senior Courtney Warren said.

The group wears shirts similar to those wore by little league baseball players, the kind with two buttons coming down from the collar, to give a classic look.

With so many returning seniors the baseball team is predicted to do very well this year and so the diamond doll group is bigger than ever with 52 girls.

Lax Lovers

Lacrosse is a large part of the Coppell community and many people love to come out and watch the team that has won state two years in a row.  Since it is so popular, but not a part of CHS athletics high school girls have still started a group of junior and senior girls to support them.

The group is fairly new since the program as a whole is fairly new as well, but the girls still give a lot of encouragement to the boys who bring home the championships.

Hockey Honeys

Hockey Honeys is a very important group since the Coppell hockey team is not a part of the high school and their games are not usually close to home.

Through the group the girls have a chance to give the hockey players the appreciation they need since they practice as hard as any other sport.

School spirit is very important to the success of schools and their athletics, and with each individual spirit group at CHs the opportunities are endless.
