With crowns on and microphones in hand, Coppell High School Ninth Grade Center theatre department brings modern royalty to the stage with its upcoming production of “SIX: Teen Edition.” The pop-concert style musical performs Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Coppell High School Auditorium.
This show reimagines the lives of King Henry VIII’s six wives, transforming them from historical references into a fierce girl group. In contrast to a traditional production, “SIX: Teen Edition” embodies a high-energy concert where the queens compete to see who suffered the most, only to realize the power of reclaiming their own narratives.
CHS9 technical theatre director Colin Thomas brainstormed musical ideas late last year, ultimately landing on “SIX: Teen Edition” in January due to the program’s strong female talent and opened auditions up to all students.
“Since the dome is being renovated right now, we’ve rehearsed in the gym over at CHS and even in the hallways,” Thomas said. “It’s been a seamless and organized process; everyone is so on top of their work.”
CHS9 student Kaylee Carpenter plays King Henry VIII’s second wife, the sassy and spoiled Anne Boleyn.
“She is a funny character who loves herself,” Carpenter said. “I’m excited for the audience to see how funny my character is—and the fact that she lost her head.”
Ultimately, Thomas hopes the show serves as a platform for female empowerment, shifting the focus away from the King and toward the women’s individual stories. To achieve this, the department is encouraging an immersive atmosphere.
“I want the audience to immerse themselves in a way you would at a basketball or football game,” Thomas said. “I want them to not be afraid to cheer.”
