“OK, guys, settle down,” The Sidekick social media manager Kole Lokhande says at the beginning of every fourth period class; her voice cuts through our high-pitched chatter about classes or looming deadlines, reminding us it is time to get serious.
Prior to even joining The Sidekick, I knew Kole. We used to volunteer together with Coppell Teen Volunteers at places like the Cozby Library and the Biodiversity Education Center. It did not matter where or when; whenever I was there, Kole was there, too. Even back then, she gave off a sense of confidence and friendliness. She was the one who started a conversation with me, and I think that is what makes her so special. She has a unique combination of self-assuredness and humor. When she needs to be, she can be strict and serious, but she never loses her warmth.
Kole can do it all.
When I found out she was going to be the editor in my class period, I was so excited. I knew I could feel comfortable around her, without needing to be shy or reserved. Throughout this year, she has helped me with every question and problem I had, even when it was not something she specialized in. She was also humble enough to admit when she was unsure about her lesser areas of expertise, such as making videos or page designs.
I remember one time I had to do my very first social media coverage, and I was terrified I would mess something up. I spent almost the whole class asking her nonstop questions. Instead of getting frustrated, she was patient and kind, taking time out of her own work to help me — that meant a lot.
I want to thank Kole for everything she has done for me and our fourth period class. While it probably was not easy being the only editor in a class made up mostly of first-year members, she handled it with the same understanding, humor and leadership she always brings.
While I wish I could predict the future, I am certain you are going to achieve great things, Kole.
