When The Sidekick editors walked into my Principles of Arts, A/V Tech and Communications classroom last year at CHS9, I was impressed by their apparent professionalism and commitment.
As a lowly freshman, I was a little scared of these great and powerful rising seniors. I eagerly watched their presentations as they talked about their sections and what The Sidekick is like. Each was interesting and accomplished in their own way, but in particular, one editor stood out to me.
Ishana Sharma introduced herself as the lifestyle and wellness section editor of our newspaper. As soon as I heard her speak, I remember sitting up straight. Her section intrigued me, and her calm demeanor made me feel comfortable instantly. When I selected Sidekick as a class for my sophomore year, I envisioned myself writing for lifestyle and wellness and becoming more like Ishana.
On my first day of Sidekick, I was overjoyed to discover that Ishana was in my class. Almost immediately, I wanted to talk to her to see what I could learn. Unfortunately, I was too shy to approach her and did not write a lifestyle and wellness story until November. However, when I did finally talk to Ishana, I learned my assumptions were right: she is kind and down to earth, as well as one of the most encouraging people I have ever met.
I am not an outgoing person, and I don’t usually have the confidence to speak up. However, Ishana is someone I know I can always talk to. Whether I’m having trouble with my stories or classwork, I know Ishana will give me advice without judgment. Even when the story I am working on has nothing to do with her, I can always count on Ishana to help and encourage me. I never feel pressured to be “perfect” when I am with her, and she has truly given me the confidence to put myself out there.
Back in August, the end of the school year had seemed so far away, but now it is almost here. It scares and saddens me that Ishana will soon be leaving The Sidekick and, by extension, me. The knowledge she will make an impact no matter where she goes is the only reason I am also excited for her graduation. Ishana is a wonderful person, and I cannot wait to see what great things she will do in the future.
Thank you, Ishana, for all your help, and I wish you the very best.
