“You should really think about writing for The Sidekick.”
This encouragement sparked an interest in the writing component of my Sidekick career, from none other than editorial page editor Nyah Rama.
My first interaction with Nyah was nothing but business. She adeptly edited my person, place or thing assignment while I nervously twiddled my fingers in the background.
Seven months later, my time in Sidekick brought me back to Nyah. Looking for something to do during the last week of school, I recall my sophomore year fondly after she welcomed me to play a few rounds of the card game, Go Fish.
Walking into D115 for the 2024-25 school year, I was reassured with good company when I noticed I would be accompanied by Nyah for a second year. We became fast friends through daily quips about our high school experience. However, no matter how much we yap, Nyah has never been deterred from her duties.
While she dishes out details over her latest nutrition endeavors, she is simultaneously editing a column and responding to inquiries on Slack. Even her 13 IB exams (and I thought four were bad) have not faltered her work ethic — Nyah is still coordinating Senior Send-off columns and promoting participation in senior columns.
This dedication is represented by the nearly 200 stories tied to her name on Coppell Student Media.
Nyah has been able to immerse herself in the opportunities provided by The Sidekick. She was assigned to take photos for an athlete earlier in the school year, and she resurfaced with a photography business.
Her seriousness to perform does not at all change her personality. I have seen many staffers approach her with an issue; they end up leaving with one less problem and a smile.
She has not only given herself a portfolio of Sidekick accomplishments, but also enhanced the program for many others. I know this personally as she talked me into writing my first column in September, and I never found my way out of this newfound passion.
We often discuss the bell curve in class, where all our staffers lie on a scale of effort for The Sidekick. Nyah Rama is leading that curve.
