On Tuesday night the Coppell softball team (16-12-1, and 6-7 in District 5-6A) lost, 7-0, to Flower Mound (17-7-1, and 11-2 in District). Coppell coach Emily Witt, even in defeat, saw improvement from the Cowgirls since the team’s last game three weeks ago against the Jaguars.
“There’s a number of things that these girls have worked on over that course of time, and one of them was just an outstanding work ethic out there on the mound,” Witt said. “They’ve been competitive all season, so they really went out there and fought hard for their team.”
Closing that gap from a 16-1 loss to 7-0 on Tuesday night was not easy to do and Witt attests the energy coming into the game.
“They’re big energy, and the energy last year was completely different so I think their mindset was different as well which makes us a changed program and I believe it’s because of the senior group,” Witt said.
Seniors were recognized prior to the game, where the announcers read the aspirations of senior players written by their parents.
Assistant Sean Smith acknowledges this game is more than just a win or lose for seniors, it’s realization.
“The younger girls are realizing that this is the last time they’re going to play on this field with everybody, and then the older girls are realizing this is the last time they’re playing here, so they’re dealing with a ton of emotion,” Smith said.
Coppell currently sits fifth in District and Flower Mound is in second place.
“You just know that Flower Mound is really solid, but, with the maturity level of our girls, I think that they went in there confident that they could compete and I really feel like we did, but we just didn’t hit,” Smith said
Coppell plays at Flower Mound Marcus on Thursday at 7 p.m.
