Coppell ISD Superintendent Dr. Brad Hunt announced his retirement on Thursday, effective at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
“I’ve been in public education for 35 years and it’s been a great experience for me,” Dr. Hunt said. “Overall it’s been good, but it’s time for me to do something different; I’m ready for a change.”
Dr. Hunt has held the position of superintendent since 2017. He started in the district as a special education instructor, climbing the ranks to superintendent through his career.
“It’s easy once you leave the classroom and work in the administration to become disconnected with the life of a teacher in the classroom,” CISD Board of Trustees president David Caviness said. “Dr. Hunt never forgot what it was like being a teacher in the classroom and his love for the teachers and the job they do really shows through.”
Dr. Hunt is retiring to take a break from stress and have more time for himself. He has no plans for future careers at the moment.
“I want to take time to decompress and spend more time with my family, but I am certainly open to new ideas, professions and experiences,” Dr. Hunt said. “I don’t have anything solidified yet, but I’m going to keep my options open.”
In the near future, Dr. Hunt trusts that the board will find a replacement who advocates for CISD and upholds its values.
“I want someone that cares about kids, cares about this community, someone who is an advocate for public education and someone that’s willing to work hard and continue to focus on the great work that we have done,” Dr. Hunt said.
According to Caviness, the board will begin discussing a replacement during its special board meeting on April 16.
Possible candidates for superintendent can come from outside of the district, as well as from within CISD. The board may also consider hiring an interim superintendent prior to making its final decision.
“I want to see someone that has strong leadership,” Caviness said. “I’m looking for someone that not only can bring a level of positivity like Dr. Hunt, but also people skills, because that’s important to our community. We want to make sure we’re hiring someone you can build trust with and continue the bond with the community.”
Dr. Hunt aspires to leave a positive impact on CISD and set good precedents.
“I hope to leave behind a legacy of commitment to student performance and student outcomes with all of our families,” Dr. Hunt said.
