Third annual KCBY-TV Film Festival puts student filmmakers in focus

From comedies to philosophical stories, Coppell filmmakers set the stage alight with talent and cinematography.

On Wednesday, KCBY-TV’s third annual Film Fest took place at 7 p.m. in the Coppell High School Auditorium. The program showcased short films created by CHS and New Tech @ Coppell FUZE filmmakers.

“The Film Festival is the best showcase of the student filmmakers in Coppell and shows a lot of student creativity,” senior program director Larry Liu said.

The event serves as not only a fundraiser, with ticket and raffle sales raising money for the program, but also an opportunity for KCBY-TV to engage with student filmmakers and the community in new ways.

“Since we typically do broadcasts and sports stories, the Film Festival is a good way for our learners to use their creativity, make short films and do things that they don’t get to do on a regular basis,” audio/video production I teacher Kendra Carter said.

The program displayed 13 short films of various genres, including drama, action, documentary and animation. Films included Kindness Spreads, Spider-Man: Blue and Sticky Note

“If you make at-home videos and post them on YouTube, there’s a place here at the high school for you,” KCBY-TV adviser Irma Kennedy said. “We want to celebrate talent and want the community to see what these young filmmakers can do.”

Hosts included Liu, senior program director Komal Koranne, senior social media director Caroline Moxley and senior coordinating producer Mira Daniel. An intermission split the first and second acts, where concessions, KCBY-TV T-shirts and raffle tickets were available for sale.

“When writing the script, we wanted to make it as fun for the audience as it was for us,” Koranne said.

Many of the audience members’ favorite parts of the night were the lively, supportive reactions to each film.

“I want the audience to leave feeling like they had a great time. All these students put on a great show and I hope they want to come back next year,” junior crew member Maya Ahn said.

The night concluded with raffle prizes, awards for the audience’s favorite films, and recognition of KCBY-TV advisers and program supporters.

“I’m amazed that we had such a great turnout today despite bad weather,” Kennedy said. “I was not expecting this many people, but everyone was alive and there was a buzz in the air. It was fabulous.”
