As someone who grew up in New Jersey, snow is synonymous with wonder.
I still remember waking up and racing to the window, the sight of a foot of snow piled atop as far as I could see.
While the sprinkles of snow here in Coppell could never compare to the blizzards of childhood, the sight of a white blanket covering my neighborhood still brings a smile to my face, as fleeting as it is.
There is a particular kind of joy that snow brings, no matter where you are. For high schoolers, it started with the intercom blaring on Wednesday with the cancelling of school the next day, and continued with the cancellation of Friday as well. Snow lets all of us unwind for a few days, sleep in and get cozy inside with a mug of hot chocolate.
But the beauty of snow doesn’t lie inside of our homes, however cozy they might be. It resides outdoors in our neighborhoods.
The sight of kids throwing snowballs at each other, the feeling of trudging through the wintry weather, and sledding down hills with your friends is a gift that anyone can enjoy. It is a chance for us to have a serendipitous day outside and forget about the worries of everyday life, whether it be school, work, or anything else that mattered.
And when the snow finally penetrates the four layers of coats you are wearing, there’s nothing better than going inside and warming up. Huddling around the heater, getting warm in bed, and brewing hot chocolate with whipped cream – it’s a feeling that can’t be matched.
So while Coppell’s two-day, shallow snow days could never compare to the snow days of my childhood, I’ll always appreciate a snow day regardless. Snow days are magical, and I advise you to make the most of them.
