PLANO – Senior running back Joshua Lock takes a handoff, darting across the field for a 17-yard gain and putting the Coppell football team in prime position at the 36 yard line, unaware of the impact his play was about to have.
With less than two minutes remaining in the quarter, if Coppell can convert, it takes the lead.
Coppell senior quarterback Edward Griffin drops back to pass, surveying his options, before finding senior wide receiver Harry Hassmann for a score. Thirty-six yards later, Coppell has its first lead of the game.
For the rest of the night, it was all Cowboys as Coppell defeated Lake Highlands, 38-10, on Friday in the Class 6A Division I Region I area playoffs on Friday at John Clark Stadium.
Coppell (12-0) plays North Crowley (12-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the regional semifinals at Mansfield’s Newsom Stadium.
“They scored on us first, which is pretty rare against our defense,” Hassmann said. “Our defense is pretty solid and that touchdown was a big confidence boost for our offense. We told the defense that ‘we got y’all’s back’ and they only scored three more points after that.”
Hassmann went on to have a successful evening, with seven receptions for 96 yards and scoring his second touchdown of the game from seven yards out with 2:45 to go in the third quarter.
“Our offensive coordinator just had a really good play call on both those plays and obviously having Edward at quarterback is just a blessing because he’s so talented,” Hassmann said. “I’m honestly blessed to have people around me that believe in me and so much talent around me.”
