Is your favorite color yellow?
It is a question I have been asked on a multitude of occasions, usually in response to the clothes I’m wearing, always followed by a chuckle and a “yes.”
I have loved the color yellow since childhood. Although I’ve never been fully clear on exactly why, the hue always seems to bring me a sense of delight.
In some ways, it has become a small part of my identity. When decorating my senior overalls, I immediately knew I needed a yellow theme. Upon seeing them, I had many friends tell me they were “so me.” Even The Sidekick editorial page editor Nyah Rama affectionately calls me “flowers,” saying I remind her of a yellow sunflower.
I am always the one choosing the yellow tokens when playing board games with family or friends. I made sure to get my phone in a yellow color, pairing it with a matching yellow dragon sticker under a transparent case, ensuring that I could never confuse my phone with anyone else’s.
It is such a little thing, but yellow never fails to make me happy. A pretty yellow flower on my walk home from school, the understated yellow glow of a parking lot sunset, the mustard yellow highlighter I use for biology notes – all spark a little joy in an otherwise mundane day, and for that, I am grateful.
This Thanksgiving, I want to give thanks to the color yellow. For making my days brighter and for contributing to expressing myself. In the same spirit, I encourage you to give thanks to the little things in your lives that make you happy and brighten your days, even if they are as insignificant as your favorite color.
