FLOWER MOUND – “You have a chance to make history, so go make it,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said to his nationally-ranked football team.
On Friday, Coppell and Flower Mound played at Neal E. Wilson Jaguar Stadium with District 5-6A playoffs implications. For Coppell, a chance to keep its undefeated season alive and win the district championship, and for Flower Mound, a chance to make the playoffs coming off consecutive victories.
The Cowboys won, 42-14, and kept their hopes alive to make history.
“Our guys are hungry for greatness,” Wiley said. “We won this game by 28 but they did not look happy with the way they showed up and that tells me that is a mark of a great team.”
With a win on Thursday against Flower Mound Marcus, Coppell can record the first back-to-back 10-0 regular seasons in program history.
With 1:18 left in the first half, Coppell had generated no points in the second, and let up a touchdown in the second quarter.
“We needed to get points on the board,” senior quarterback Edward Griffin said. “I trust these guys and they went out and got the stops and points that we needed to maintain our lead.”
Starting with a 12-yard pass to senior wide receiver Harry Hassmann and two plays later, a 27-yard catch in the middle of the field by senior wide receiver Tucker Cusano as well as a 21 yard catch, Coppell was operating a “two-minute drill.” The next play, Griffin dropped back 12 yards as he threw a touchdown pass in the middle of the field to end the 1:11 drive, adding 7 points on the board, putting the game at 21-7 going into half.
Coming out of halftime, Flower Mound sophomore quarterback Noah Spinks connected on a 66-yard completion for junior wide receiver Ryan Stadler, setting up a seven-yard rushing touchdown by Spinks.
“They should not be passing all over us like they did on that drive,” senior safety Alex Kraus said. “We were able to lock in and do our best job after and that is the best part of our team..”
Three drives later, Coppell had 35 points and Flower Mound was still at 14.
With Coppell driving and running the clock, Griffin found Cusano on a slant route and he broke three tackles on a 66-yard touchdown.
“We are going to have to go out and hit hard on Thursday,” Wiley said. “I am blessed to be around these guys but we still need to get work done so we are going to go and get it done.”
