LEWISVILLE – The Coppell football team has been pushed back to the 12-yard line as Lewisville is advancing desperately trying to bring the score within two possessions. Then, chaos ensued as sophomore quarterback Tre Williams tried to scramble away from the pocket, getting the ball knocked out by senior defensive lineman Uche Odimegwu.
After senior offensive lineman Luke Hudson slipped on the turf, missing the ball, senior linebacker Weston Polk pounced on it, returning it back for an 88-yard scoop and score.
Polk’s score finalized a 55-28 Coppell victory over Lewisville on Friday night at Max Goldsmith Stadium in a key District 5-6A game.
“I am so proud of these kids for showing up,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said. “We knew Lewisville would come out fast and the guys responded well.”
Senior quarterback Edward Griffin had a game to be remembered throwing for six touchdowns and 460 yards with a 90% completion percentage.
“He’s special,” Wiley said. “Even when we were down at half I knew that I just had to get it into his hands and good things would happen.”
Senior wide receivers Harry Hassmann and Tucker Cusano each had three touchdown receptions.
“The connection between him and I,” Cusano said. “Especially when he is scrambling out of the pocket and me knowing where he is going to throw the ball is something that makes both of us extremely good.”
Starting off with eight penalties, three snaps going over Griffin’s head and a sloppy performance overall, Coppell trailed 14-13 at halftime.
“We didn’t execute well in the first half at all,” Wiley said. “We made some adjustments and hats off to the coaching staff and the players who came up big for us.”
With Coppell now control of their own fate, its mentality of one game a week will be carried to next week as it plays Denton Braswell on Friday at Buddy Echols Field.
“What matters to me is that the team keeps his eyes on the prize,” Wiley said. “We have to go 1-0 every week. It’s a one game mentality.”
