Faculty Focus is a student life series, featuring a faculty member at Coppell High School, rotating by department each week.
Coppell High School AP teacher Linda Moore has been teaching students at CHS for over 30 years. With her love for English, she brings forth an engaging learning environment within her classroom.
What inspired you to become an educator?
When I was younger, I would always roleplay as a teacher which sparked my interest in this field. As I was in 11th grade trying to figure out what I wanted to be, the thought of being a home economics teacher arose, but I had an English teacher who shifted my perspective. My English teacher told me that I was a perfect fit for being an English teacher instead.
How would you describe your approach to working with students?
I set high expectations for my students as I’m working with them. As a well-organized person, my students have a clear understanding of how things are supposed to be. I set up systems that are in place so that everybody has access to all the information that they need. I believe it’s really important to make sure everybody knows what we’re supposed to be doing and the goal they are trying to reach. Since this is an AP class, it is my mission to reach everybody’s goal.
What’s a memorable moment from your time at CHS?
My most memorable moment from working at CHS was being nominated for Teacher of the Year, which was a wonderful honor. I’ve also been the teacher of the month; I remember from when they would give us backpacks, resulting in my coveted collection of backpacks. Two years ago, I hit my 30 years of service at CHS, where there was a recognition in front of the school board. Within my 30 years, I remember working alongside [CISD Superintendent Dr. Brad Hunt], it was special to have him present my 30-year award.
What do you love most about working at CHS? What are your goals for this school year?
What I love most about working here are the students; they are enjoyable every single day. I still love coming to work and I should probably retire, but I still enjoy doing what I do. Seeing my students strive for their growth from the beginning of the year to the end and seeing people be successful on the AP exam at the end of the year makes me motivated to become a better teacher. In terms of goals, I would like the AP scores to increase, as Coppell is ahead of Texas rates; I believe there’s always room to grow.
What advice would you give to new staff members at CHS?
For new staff members at CHS, the most important aspect I learned is to develop relationships with students. Invest time and energy into your teaching environment and create a fun and engaging experience that students can remember. I remember when English II teacher Hannah Corley first joined – she had engaging lessons that allowed students to explore difficult concepts in an amusing way.
