DENTON – Setting up for a field goal to take the lead by 10, Denton Guyer surrounds the Coppell football team as it snaps the ball.
The kick is up and it is blocked. Guyer tries to pounce on it but senior safety Alex Kraus gets there after a Guyer player slips, tipping the ball in his direction, attaining his first fumble recovery of the night.
A play later, Coppell would score, effectively ending the game.
“When we went out to kick the field goal, our wing fell over giving [Guyer] an opportunity to block it,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said. “Once they blocked it, they tried to recover it but tipped the ball, making it a live ball and we were able to pounce on it, helping us maintain that two score lead and score.”
On Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, No. 10 Coppell (5-0) and No. 20 Guyer (4-2) were locked in an intense Class 6A top 20 duel with Coppell coming out on top, 31-24.
Guyer’s defense made it challenging for the Coppell offense in the first half.
“There are never any major adjustments,” Wiley said. “I trusted that [senior quarterback Edward Griffin] would get going like he usually does and he did.”
Completing 14 of his 21 attempts for 181 yards, Griffin was efficient, sticking to the game plan.
“The plan coming in was that we did not want to turn the ball over,” Griffin said. “I think the guys did a great job doing that and we went out and got the win.”
On defense, Kraus was a part of four turnovers, including two interceptions (one for a touchdown) and two fumble recoveries.
“It was a team effort,” Kraus said. “Obviously I had to do my part, but it was the team that came together and helped get the win.”
With a 5-0 record and 2-0 mark in District 5-6A, Guyer head coach Reed Heim spoke highly of Coppell.
“They are a really good football team,” Heim said. “We expected this battle. Coach Wiley has done a great job and Eddie is a great quarterback and we had to limit the big plays which we were able to mostly contain.”
Coppell returns to Buddy Echols Field against Little Elm on Friday.
