35-21.
A game that Denton Guyer will remember. Last year in the Class 6A bi-district playoffs, the Coppell football team and Guyer battled.
Eleven months later, Guyer hosts Coppell in a rematch on Friday at the C.H. Collins Athletics Complex at 7 p.m.
“We all know that this is a big game,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said. “The kids know, the coaches know, so everybody’s a little more on edge when walking to practice, knowing the attention to detail has to be higher.”
With Coppell and Guyer ranked top 20 in Class 6A according to Dave Cambell’s Texas High School Football rankings, Wiley said Coppell needs to step up and focus on minimizing mistakes.
“We try to push it to the limits and make sure that we’re minimizing mistakes as well as getting the most reps possible,” Wiley said. “I don’t need anybody to be a hero. I just need 11 guys on the field on offense and defense doing their job and special teams as well.”
With four-star senior quarterback Kevin Sperry, an Oklahoma commitment, and four-star junior safety Kaedyn Cobbs heading the offense and defense for Guyer, Wiley wants to ensure the Cowboys stick to the game plan.
“We adjust by playing assignment football, and doing your job,” Wiley said. “It’s going to be a collective group effort as it has been all year.”
With major attention coming to this game including college scouts and sports media, Coppell is focused on winning and moving to next week.
“I told the guys that they weren’t getting all that media attention before you were winning,” Wiley said. “We just have to focus and walk into a big game like this against Guyer and not let that get to us.”
