Sometimes the best offense can be a formidable defense. The Coppell volleyball team utilized this strategy to sweep Denton Braswell, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17, on Friday at the CHS Arena in District 5-6A action.
“The girls pursued the ball well,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “Not many of Braswell’s hits came over that we weren’t able to touch or get up.”
During the first set, sophomore middle blocker Finley Penniman increased the Cowgirls’ lead with a defensive block, 21-16.
“We knew our middles had to be a factor in order for the game to work in our favor today,” Ross said.
The Bengals put forth a fight during the second set as the teams vied for a one-point lead. The Cowgirls broke the tie at 5-5 when Braswell hit the net, emphasizing the struggle to lead the set.
Coppell scored six of the final nine points in the second set to take control of the match.
According to Ross, the Cowgirls will work more on blocking and putting shots together for the offensive side in order to uphold their momentum.
