On Tuesday, the Coppell tennis team secured the District 5-06A title and defeated Flower Mound Marcus, 16-3, at the Coppell Tennis Center.
“I’m really proud of the team,” coach Alyssa Noonan said. “This is a goal that they set at the beginning of our preseason and we have had a really incredible run so far.”
Despite some setbacks, Coppell still emerged successful.
“We had some key players out of our lineup tonight due to unforeseen circumstances,” Noonan said. “But everyone stepped up and stepped into the spots that we needed them to, and we still pulled out a huge win tonight.”
Junior Lexie Patton and freshman Palkin Gangwal won their doubles match, 6-0, 6-0.
“In this last match, I think I did well with keeping the rally long, keeping my opponents back and making sure to come into the net and attacking when necessary,” Patton said. “I also think just having good communication with my partner and making sure we are on the same page with how the points are being played helped.”
Following Patton’s and Gangwal’s match, senior Sarayu Thallapareddy won her singles match against Marcus’s Katerina Ilyukhina, 6-1, 6-1. She followed certain strategies that led her to be successful.
“I was being very aggressive while playing and that worked out in my favor,” Thallapareddy said. “I also waited for a short ball and then I came on it and hit it.”
Coppell opens the Class 6A playoffs on Tuesday.
“We are really excited for the opportunity to compete in the playoff bracket and are hoping to make the state tournament,” Noonan said. “It will be a tough path, but I know that we will fight through it and I will be proud as long as we are playing as hard as we can.”
