Coppell sophomore third baseman Madison Scott bats during the third inning against Hebron at the Coppell ISD Baseball/ Softball Complex on Friday. The Hawks defeated the Cowgirls, 12-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, Hebron junior Haylee Epps shortstop makes a three-run home run, scoring three runs and putting the game out of reach for the Coppell softball team.

On Friday night, Hebron defeated the Cowgirls, 12-0, at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex.

“Our strategy was to control their offense, play a clean game defensively and then try to score one more run than they did,” Coppell coach Robbie Moen said.

Coppell and Hebron remained tied at 0-0 till the top of the second inning, with Hebron sophomore Liz Cardona catcher scoring the first run of the game.

Things take a successful swing for Hebron in the top of the fourth inning by scoring eight runs to take control of the game.

“Once we get behind, you’re just trying to play catch up as best you can,” Moen said. “You’re trying to get runners on base, you’re trying to get the pitchers to execute and you just keep trying to get good defense behind them.”

As it regroups, the Cowgirls will work to improve communication in the field.

“Communication was a big part of defense,” junior Kimber Kerrigan said. “We didn’t talk much and I think the communication just wasn’t there.”

Coppell (12-14-0) plays Flower Mound on Tuesday.

“We’re just trying to do the basics,” Moen said. “We’re not a power hitting team, but we got to get runners on bases. We’ve got to learn not to chase pitches, we’ve got to learn to not chase pitches that are out of the zone and we’ve got to get better at not missing our pitches that are in the zone as hitters.”
