Self-care is a $9.9 billion industry associated with products, beauty and spending, when in reality, its true meaning is much more simple.

In this episode, The Sidekick staff designer Safiya Azam and staff writer Caitlyn Concepcion speak to Coppell High School head counselor Ann Cinelli and sophomore Matteo Zanelli to learn more about the warped perception of self-care and how it’s gone from empowerment of self to a booming corporate industry.

Caitlyn Concepcion, Staff Writer

Caitlyn Concepcion is a junior and a second-year staff writer for The Sidekick. While she initially joined to write columns, her interests in photography and podcasting grew exponentially while working with the program. When she’s not grinding away at school, Caitlyn winds down by regularly updating her Letterboxd account with recently watched films – her favorites being Fallen Angels, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Meet the Robinsons. Safiya Azam, Staff Designer

Safiya Azam is a second-year junior on The Sidekick, she loves all forms of journalism from graphics, writing, podcasting, photography and more! When she's not working on a story you can find her thrifting, binging shows, or doodling. Contact Safiya at [email protected].

Wendy Le, Executive Social Media Editor

Wendy Le is in her third year in The Sidekick as a senior and the executive social media editor. Throughout her time in this program, she’s found joy in doing things and going to places she never thought she would’ve: standing on the sidelines, in the back of the Black Box Theatre, political rallies, learning how to use Adobe, taking photos, making social media graphics and writing features. Le does have hobbies outside of D115. When she’s not scouring to get things edited or feeding The Sidekick social media accounts, she likes to brain rot on TikTok, craft new Pinterest boards, go thrifting and take photos on her digital camera.
