After a summer of reading through driver’s education lessons, Coppell High School junior Mariya Biju was eagerly waiting for Thursday, the day her freedom would open to new doors.
Biju would be receiving her permit. However, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) sent her an email, one that would ruin her day.
The Texas DPS has canceled driver’s license appointments throughout the state for two straight days since Wednesday.
Due to an ongoing upgrade which started during Labor Day weekend, all driver’s license services have ceased, closing DPS offices statewide as well as delaying online services.
On Wednesday, Texas DPS canceled all appointments that day as well as any appointments on Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. However on Thursday afternoon, an update was released stating that all appointments have been canceled for the day.
Services that have been stopped include: granting a driver’s record, renewing or replacing a driver’s license, verification of eligibility and obtaining an identification card.
Customers have been given the opportunity to reschedule their canceled appointments through email or phone.
“I was excited to get my permit on Thursday,” Biju said. “Finding an appointment was difficult enough, so having to rebook it is annoying. I am hoping that I can find another appointment as soon as possible”
According to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth, there was no security threat identified within the system causing the issues.
A statement released by the Texas DPS on Thursday said, “Department personnel continue working to fix this issue. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
No update has been made by the DPS for what the conditions will be today.
