The Coppell boy lacrosse team finds itself down by two goals with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys’ hope for a victory slipping as quickly as the pink and orange hues of the sunset fade into the dark blue night sky.

Friday night, the Coppell boys lacrosse team fell to Southlake Carroll, 9-7.

Less than six minutes remained in the game, Southlake leading by four, leaving Coppell looking for an opportunity to even the score. Coppell junior defense Nate Sullivan drives to the Dragons’ goal and thrusts the ball into the back of the net, diminishing Southlake’s lead to 9-6.

Just above a minute later, Coppell sophomore attack Edward Griffin scores for the Cowboys, turning and jumping into fellow teammate Cale Stricklin’s arms in celebration right after. Coppell now returns to reset for the next play, Southlake still in the lead, 9-7, with 4:08 left on the clock.

The time on the clock flashes by, the Cowboys unable to score another goal and maintain their momentum.

“To hold that team to two goals in the second half is amazing,” Coppell boys lacrosse coach Matt Mueller said. “The fact that we were in that game and had a chance to win it just speaks to [our players’] toughness and the way they prepared last week. They played their hearts out and that is all we can ask for as coaches.”
