Cowgirls fall to Wildcats in home opener
February 16, 2023
On Tuesday night, the Coppell softball team lost to Denton Guyer, 15-5, at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex.
Though Coppell made an effort to tie Denton Guyer in the fifth inning, coming from runs by Frosk and Gullatt again, bringing the score up to 6-5, Wildcats, the sixth inning determined the game.
The Wildcats scattered nine runs in the sixth inning alone, strengthening their lead 15-5. This was made possible by consecutive hits by Denton Guyer to the outfield, with Coppell unable to recover the ball in time. With Coppell unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, the game ended due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The first inning showed a promising start for the Cowgirls, gaining a 2-1 lead by the end of the inning with runs from Coppell seniors Sabina Frosk and Hannah Gullatt. Similarly, the top half of the second inning was over within five minutes of it starting, keeping Guyer scoreless. Coppell sophomore Nevaeh Carter scored the only run of the inning, bringing the score to 3-1.
The Wildcats closed the Cowgirls’ lead in the third inning with two back-to-back runs with a third run later, and took a 4-3 lead. Coppell scored no runs this inning. Neither team scored runs in the fourth inning.
Though upset by the loss, the Cowgirls hope to come back stronger for their next game.
“I think we’re just going to keep working hard, keep practicing what we’ve been doing, and work together as a team,” Frosk said.
The Cowgirls play at the Bayou City High School Classic in Rosenburg outside of Houston on Thursday.
