Cowgirls ride first-half lead to victory against Wolves
January 26, 2023
On Wednesday, the Coppell girls soccer team defeated Plano West, 4-1, for the second time this season.
Coppell maintained a lead throughout the match. Almost immediately, the Wolves fouled the Cowgirls, leading to a free kick. About 10 minutes into the match, the first goal was made by sophomore midfielder Summer Chen.
“You’ve got to give credit to Summer Chen,” Coppell coach Craig Able said. “She’s been out for a while, so for her to be able to come in and contribute goals and assists and really anchor that midfield was huge for us.”
Senior midfielder Mia Brasseaux scored about 20 minutes in, bringing the score to 2-0. Back-and-forth play continued for the next 20 minutes with strong defense from Coppell, especially sophomore defender/midfielder Monica Morales. The first half ended with no additional goals from either team.
“The backline was fantastic in particular,” Able said. “I thought Monica Morales did a fantastic job against some really tough players.”
The Wolves scored the first goal of the second half, but the Cowgirls were not deterred. Junior forward Sadie Ozymy scored two goals in quick succession—less than five minutes apart—and brought the score to 4-1, which was the final score.
“I’m very proud,” senior forward Bella McGill said. “Especially because last year, we had an unfortunate loss to Plano West, but we really stepped it up this year. We also played against them last week, so it’s great to have a back-to-back win early in the season.”
The Cowgirls play at Lewisville on Friday.
“It’s a quick turnaround,” Able said. “So we’re making sure we get the right rest and recovery tomorrow, while also game planning and getting ready for a tough Lewisville team.”
