Coppell ends round one of district with victory against Plano

The Coppell volleyball team swiftly defeated Plano 25-9, 25-22, 25-12 at Coppell High School Arena Friday night, extending its winning streak to six matches.

“We had a good energy and a good consistency throughout the whole three sets,” Coppell senior middle blocker Allie Stricker said. “There really never needed to be a turning point because we just kept it on a high the whole time; everyone played amazing.”

Elementary Night garnered a greater crowd for the Cowgirls and morale stayed high. The Cowgirls’ were able to defeat the Wildcats in the first set, 25-9.

The Wildcats made a comeback at the beginning of the second set, scoring four consecutive points and taking the lead. The Cowgirls, however, fought back with powerful kills by Coppell senior outside hitter Skye LaMendola and phenomenal digs by Coppell senior defense specialist Sabina Frosk. The scoring was back and forth towards the end of the set, but a kill made by Stricker led Coppell to win the second set, 25-22.

“We didn’t execute as well as we should have in the second set,” LaMendola said. It was just a little too close for how we should have played, but overall it was a great game for us.”

The Cowgirls, with a strong offense, continued to dominate through the third set. Plano senior middle hitter Victoria Ragas put up strong opposition, scoring kills numerous times throughout the match, but the Cowgirls took home the victory, winning the third set 25-12.

The victory for Coppell now solidifies the Cowgirls’ standing as second in District 6-6A. LaMendola had the best hitting percentage during the match and the most kills with 14. She currently is leading the district in kills. Frosk had the most digs (17) during the match and is currently leading the district in digs. Stricker had nine kills during the match and is leading the district in hitting percentage. Coppell senior setter Taylor Young is leading the district in assists.

“Really, it was just a huge team effort,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “Tonight there were standouts for different things at different times. It really was one of those that everybody played a part in, which is always fun.”

Round one of district is officially complete. The Cowgirls will start round two by hosting Plano West on Tuesday at CHS Arena.
