The Coppell volleyball team won its Senior Night match against Plano East, 28-26, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21, on Tuesday at CHS Arena.

The Cowgirls went into the match with a strategy of hitting specific spots on the court where they knew “holes” existed in the Panthers’ play. Coppell won the first set, 27-25.

Coppell won the second set, 26-24.

By the third set, the Panthers anticipated the Cowgirls’ game strategy and covered up the holes after Coppell’s lead in the first two sets. Coppell lost the third set, 22-25. The Cowgirls had to shift their strategy to gain the upper hand again.

“The girls executed the game plan really well,” Coppell coach Robin Ross said. “Plano East came back and made some adjustments, so we had to make more adjustments to come away with the win.”

Coppell added a second setter with setters Mira Klem and Taylor Young, and ran a different offense to rethink their strategy mid-match. Strong serves from Coppell setter Taylor Young allowed multiple points for Coppell.

In addition, scores from middle blockers Allie Stricker and Ekwe Anwah in the fourth set carried Coppell to victory. Anwah scored the final five points to put Coppell in the lead.

Coppell opened the match running a 5-1 rotation. They worked against strong hitters and scrappy defense from Plano East, but keeping through with the initial game plan allowed the Cowgirls to seize control of the initial sets.

“We started off expecting slow middles on the Plano East side,” Young said. “Their players have something, and they stick to it.”

The Cowgirls host Hebron on Friday at the CHS Arena.
