Coppell junior shortstop TJ Pompey fields an infield hit against Flower Mound Marcus at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex on April 30. The Cowboys play McKinney Boyd in the Class 6A Region I bi-district playoffs, traveling to the Broncos on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for Game 1, hosting on Saturday at 12:30 p.m, for Game 2 and the potential Game 3 would immediately follow Game 2.

Last week was a big week, maybe the biggest week under Coppell coach Ryan Howard, for the Coppell baseball team.

The Cowboys swept state-ranked Flower Mound to secure the Co-District 6-6A Championship before defeating No.6 Flower Mound Marcus in a seeding game to clinch the first seed.

As monumental as the moment was for No.4 Coppell (21-6-1), the Cowboys have not let a district championship distract them from the ultimate prize: a Class 6A state championship. Merely, the district championship serves as a stepping stone for the first of many championships Coppell aspires to earn this year.

Coppell will begin its quest for its first state championship since 1995 by playing McKinney Boyd (15-10-1) in a best-of-three Class 6A Region I bi-district playoffs series.

The Cowboys travel to Boyd for Game 1 on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex and Game 3, if necessary, will immediately follow Game 2.

Coppell, riding a five-game winning streak, has seen its confidence at-bat skyrocket in recent weeks to pair elite pitching and defense with effective offense going into playoffs. Across the three games last week, junior first baseman Andrew Schultz totaled four hits and five RBIs.

“We have a lot of momentum coming in,” Schultz said. “The past two games [against Flower Mound and Flower Mound Marcus], we’ve just been hitting hard balls to everyone with not many strikeouts. We’re ready for the playoffs and to hit the ball hard, we’re ready.”

For Coppell, the focus is not on Boyd but rather on itself and making sure it performs to the best of its ability.

“It’s not really about who we play, typically, it is about how we play and as long as we can execute and play our game, I’m going to feel confident in our chances,” Howard said.

The Cowboys, however, are not overlooking the fourth-seed Broncos.

“The first round, we have to be ready,” Coppell senior designated hitter Landry Fee said. “There are no easy teams in our district or in our bi-district, which is just where our location is, and that’s something we’ve battled through, really showing for us last year, so we have to come out ready to go in round one. It’s the playoffs, we have to win and we’ll keep it going from there”
