As the game wore on, Coppell coach Ryan Howard and the Coppell baseball team became increasingly frustrated about how it could not get any rhythm offensively and how it let Lewisville hang around.

That was until the sixth inning.

Ultimately an error allowed the Cowboys to scratch a run across as they defeated the Farmers, 3-0, last night at Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex.

With one out in the sixth, Coppell senior catcher Bradley Castillo singled on a hard ground ball to left field and senior third baseman Walker Polk was intentionally walked. Senior designated hitter Landry Fee hit a fly ball to right field and reached second base on a Lewisville error.

That same error allowed junior courtesy runner Zack Darkoch, running for Castillo, to score and allowed Polk to advance to third base to give Coppell its first run of the night.

After junior second baseman Tanner Sever walked, the bases were loaded again for the Cowboys with one out. Junior first baseman Andrew Schultz then singled on a line drive to center field for two RBIs as Polk and Fee scored for the Cowboys.

“We scored our run on an error so I’d say that it was lucky,” Fee said.

Despite the win, the performance was subpar by the standards of the Coppell baseball team.

“Offensively, we struggled a lot,” Coppell junior pitcher TJ Pompey said. “We know this was unacceptable. We know we can do way better than this. We just need to get better at staying with the baseball, hitting line drives and not hitting pop ups. We just need to be better.”

In the bottom of the first with one out, senior left fielder Andrew Nester doubled on a line drive to left field but a pop out by Castillo and fly out by Polk ended the inning.

In the bottom of the second, Fee singled on a hard ground ball to right field but Sever, Schultz and senior right fielder Will Boylan were all retired subsequently.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Nester singled on a hard ground ball to right field but Castillo flew out to end the inning.

Pompey gave up his first hit of the night in the top of the fourth as junior shortstop Drew Schmidt singled on a line drive to right field.

A walk and throwing error with one out allowed Lewisville to get a runner on third base but a crucial double play from Nester in which he caught a line drive and threw it to Castillo worked Pompey out of a jam.

“Nester did what he needed to do and he came up big with that throw to home to keep the game level,” Pompey said.

Nester collected two hits while Fee, Schultz and Castillo all had a hit apiece for Coppell (15-5-1, 8-1 in District 6-6A).

Pompey ended the night with allowing one hit, walking one and striking out four over six innings. Fee came on in relief in the sixth inning and struck out three.

“The part that is not lucky is TJ going out and shoving with no runs on the board,” Fee said. “He pitched amazingly and kept us in the game.”

The Cowboys travel to Lewisville (12-10, 3-6) tomorrow with first pitch at 7:30 p.m.
