Continuing a streak of nondistrict victories, the Cowgirls won Tuesday night’s game against Edgewood at the CHS Arena, 66-57.

Coppell established a five point lead within five minutes of the first quarter, and used its defense to build a 32-19 halftime lead.

“[The game] was up and down,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “There were multiple times where we had an opportunity to kind of put the game out of reach and we just weren’t disciplined to do the little things consistently. We’ve just got to do a better job.”

In the fourth quarter, despite Edgewood scoring with 27 out of 29 freethrows, Coppell maintained at least a five-point lead, aided by Coppell junior guards Allyssa Potter and Jules LaMendola who shot 28 and 14 points respectively. Coppell junior guard Saiya Patel played solid defense in the second half.

“It was really hard with the foul count to be aggressive on offense,” Coppell junior guard Waverly Hassman said. “[But] we shot a lot better. If we just take each game and play hard every day, it will come together.”

Despites the inconsistencies, Murphy said Coppell is making good progress as the team heads into district games.

“We’re further ahead than we were last year,” Murphy said. “[The girls are] hungry. They’re playing hard. We’ve just got to continue to find depth and be more disciplined on the court, but we’re heading in the right direction.”

The Cowgirls play Burleson at 9 a.m. on tomorrow in the CHS Large Gym.
