Although the Coppell girls varsity golf team faced wet and windy weather in The Colony on Monday, it achieved second place at the district tournament and will be moving on to regionals. The tournament took place on The Tribute golf course.

The Cowgirls two-day total was 627, shooting a 309 on Tuesday and 318 on Monday. Coppell moves on to the Class 6A Region I Tournament on April 19-20 at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie.

“The girls didn’t have their absolute best game, but they played good enough to take care of business and that’s all that matters,” Coppell coach Jan Bourg said.

Coppell senior golfer Jamie Welsh (who shot 77 on Tuesday and 80 on Monday) said the weather conditions were challenging.

“The weather was crazy, it was wild,” Welsh said. “I had my umbrella up because it was sprinkling a little bit. It started to downpour and it was very distracting. We all threw on rain jackets and at The Tribute, no matter how the wind is, the wind will be 10 to 15 miles per hour stronger. It wasn’t the worst we have seen out there, but it was definitely something that needed to be managed.”

Due to COVID-19, last year’s season ended early. This season is Welsh’s and Coppell senior golfer Chelsea Romas’ (Romas scored 75 on Tuesday and 76 on Monday) last season before they start their college golf journeys, so the golf team aspires to go to the state tournament.

“[We were motivated to perform well] because we wanted to get out of district so bad,” Welsh said. “Last year was going to be our big shot to win districts and to go to state. Romas and I are both seniors and it would be a really sad way to end our senior year if we couldn’t come out of districts. I am really excited that we did.”
