Due to inclement weather pausing play last week, the Coppell girls soccer team is contending with a tighter schedule of district play. The team plays their fourth match of the week tomorrow against Marcus at 7:30 p.m. at Buddy Echols Field.

A schedule of three to four matches in the next two weeks lies ahead.

“This week has been pretty rough on our legs,” Coppell senior forward Jojo Alonzo said. “Personally, I’m just trying to prevent injury and keep my head in the game.”

However, the lapse in practice has not kept the Cowgirls from dominating district play, defeating both Plano and Plano West this week.

“Our biggest challenge in playing teams is just our work ethic and how their style of play is,” Alonzo said. “Everyone has a different style of play but I just feel like in [District 6-6A], we have one of the hardest districts in the state. Our forwards are pretty good, so it’s just about being able to compact and fight through every game.”

In Marcus, the Cowgirls see a formidable opponent. Alonzo thinks the key to attacking the Marauders will be to break past their defense and focus on spreading their opponents thin across the field.

“Being able to stretch them wide and exploit their outside back will be important,” Alonzo said. “Their defense is strong, so being able to push our center midfielders into the attack will get them to counter.”
