Old power plant imploded after 48 years

By Jay Carroll
Staff Writer

The final tower of the 48 year old Lumiant power plant that once stood along Beltline Road in Coppell, was demolished early in the morning of Thursday, Oct. 4.

The first tower of the old power plant, which powered 350,000 homes but has not been in use since 2008, came down in April. The second tower came down in June.  There are still some more structures that need to be taken down, but a date has yet to be set for the continuation of the dismantling of the plant. The company is going to recycle 95 percent of the scrap metal, copper and steel.

There are talks about Luminant selling the land, if the City of Coppell buys the new land, then they might use it as a training area for firefighters or policemen.
