Love for storytelling drives Kulkarni’s participation in journalism

Coppell High School sophomore Isha Kulkarni is a first year Round-Up yearbook staffer.

What inspired you to pursue journalism?

I was actually introduced to Round-Up and journalism in the [summer of 2019] when we had the summer bootcamp. I loved the part where we write stories, I love to give the readers a student’s perspective on stuff rather than an adults’ perspectives. When a student writes about another student or an event they will see life through a teen’s perspective. I’m in the “Chrono academic” which means I get assigned modules every week, I get quotes, and take pictures and get the names of the people. I also get to cover events in and around Coppell sometimes.

What are your future plans in journalism?

I wouldn’t necessarily take journalism as a career, I see it more as a hobby. I am looking into IT or business. I am very business minded and I’m planning to shadow at my dad’s company this summer. But journalism is just a way to express my ideas and also other people’s ideas into something. I love writing too, which makes journalism so much more fun and interesting.

What do you do in your free time?

I haven’t been able to do much after moving from Virginia in my freshman year, but I danced for a couple of years, and I took singing lessons too. I really want to pick up both of those again but right now I am trying to find my priorities, balancing high school and yearbook can get a little stressful. [The transition moving has] been good. We have lived in Texas before and we know a lot of friends that live there so the transition wasn’t too bad.

What does Scholastic Journalism Week mean to you?

It’s a great opportunity to shine light on our media teams at Coppell. Journalism is an art itself and it’s great to see it recognized. And I’m so glad I get to celebrate that with the staff of the yearbook which honestly inspired me so much over the year I have been with them.
