Red Jackets spreading smiles, spirit with Christmas caroling
December 16, 2019
Filled with holiday spirit while standing on the senior bridge, the Coppell High School Red Jackets sing Christmas carols such as “Let it Snow,” “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” with a smile plastered on their faces as students walk below on Friday during C lunch passing period.
“Caroling is fun,” CHS AP Psychology teacher Kristia Leyedecker said. “It’s humbling. Not everybody is a singer but to get out there and belt at the top of your lungs that makes somebody smile makes you feel good.”
This tradition roots itself in spreading Christmas joy amongst CHS students as the first semester comes to a close.
““It invokes a time when communities sought to bring joy to one another,” Leyendecker said. “It’s about the giving season and camaraderie and not so much about the hustle and bustle of Christmas.”
Dressed in red and green holiday sweaters, the Red Jackets’ voices boomed across the main hallway, attracting the inquisitive looks of many students and teachers.
The Red Jackets also caroled in Student Services North for CHS faculty.
In the midst of early college decisions and cumulative exams, the caroling acted as a respite from stress and focused on the nostalgia and joy of the holiday season.
“[My favorite part of caroling] is spreading spirit,” CHS Red Jacket Athira Suresh said. “Our school can lack spirit because everyone is stressed out about cumulative exams.”
Despite not having practiced their songs, the Red Jackets sung in unison, letting the sentimentality of Christmas guide them.
