Arena holds special place in hearts of students

Just as the Buddy Echols Field holds a special place in the heart of Coppell citizens, the basketball arena creates an atmosphere of school spirit and joy that students will remember for their entire lives.
Coppell High School is huge, and it’s no secret we struggle to house our entire school in one room for pep rallies and major sports events. Assistant principal Chase Vaughn states “The CHS Arena is so special because it not only serves the needs of our athletic department and Coppell High School functions, but it is a valuable resource that CISD and the Coppell community utilize for bigger events that used to leave the city before we had this great venue.”
The arena is intimidating, especially when someone stands in the middle of the court and views the sea of red chairs. Its nearly 3,000 seats can hold the entire student body. “It’s exciting but also nerve wracking to know there’s so many people watching and they can see us all on the jumbotron” says sophomore basketball player Devesh Lahoti.
When we think of high school spirit, we think of the football games, the cheerleaders and the drill team. But as each year passes, we find ourselves in a sort of fervor for basketball season. We scream for 3-pointers instead of touchdowns and cheer for good passes instead of tackles. The winter opens up a new chance for a new sport and a new shot at winning. The arena cultivates the attitude, echoing our cheers for the Cowboys.
Pep rallies are loud, messy and an absolutely essential part of the high school experience. High school isn’t always an enjoyable experience, but the environment of pep rallies truly enforces the idea that we are all in this together. Lariette Jr. Lieutenant Kennedy McCann says, “We put a lot of hard work and dedication into our dances and when we perform them, it’s rewarding to know we’re bringing a feeling of togetherness to Coppell High School.”
For some seniors, their last time at the arena is bittersweet. The arena hosts the Coppell tradition of the senior swing and the final time the Lariettes will toss up their drill team hats. Perhaps you’re not into sports and maybe don’t have a single positive emotion toward this school. But at the very least, we can say the CHS Arena played an essential part in forming our high school experience.
