In-form Cowgirls to play Lady Hawks in second district match
January 25, 2019
The Coppell girls soccer team had a good start to its District 6-6A season with a 3-0 win against Irving MacArthur on Tuesday. Now, the Cowgirls are prepping to play against the Hebron Lady Hawks tonight at 7:30 p.m in a home match at Buddy Echols Field.
Last year, Coppell had an impressive run, winning the District 9-6A championship for the second time in a row, and fighting its way through four playoff matches and ending the season with a record of 19-3-3. However, the Cowgirls’ hopes of clinching their first state championship in four years were shattered when they lost in the regional semifinals to the Round Rock Lady Dragons.
Since being crowned state champions in 2015, the Cowgirls have continuously made the playoff stage but had never been as close to clinching the championship again as they were last year. Now, the Cowgirls are again looking at qualifying for the playoffs this district season.
This year, coming off a 12-1-1 preseason, the Cowgirls entered district in good form, something that was visible during the match on Tuesday.
Though they already have one district win already in their pocket, the upcoming match against the Hebron may prove to be a difficult win. Hebron has also been performing well; the team recently finished off its preseason with a 6-0-1 record and also kicked off its district season strong with a 6-0 win against Irving Nimitz.
Both the Cowgirls and the Lady Hawks have shown potential so far this season, so Friday’s match may be a competitive one. Follow the action on Twitter at @SidekickSports, with coverage starting at 7:30 p.m.
