On Friday night, the Coppell boys basketball team secured a 50-43 victory against the Hebron Hawks at the Coppell High School arena.

With 11 points in the final quarter, the Cowboys were able to maintain their undefeated district record.

The two teams were neck and neck from the very start of the game. The first quarter ended 16-16.

With the Hawks starting with a three-pointer in the first 20 seconds of the game, the Cowboys were either slightly trailing or tied up throughout the first quarter and the better part of the second quarter.

However, by the end of the first half, the Cowboys led 25-19.

“I figured it would be a back-and-forth game early,” Coppell coach Clint Schnell said. “But we’ve been in those situations before; it’s not something new for us, so we just try to go out there and play through the adversity. We rally around the good things and forget about the bad things and move on.”

In the last three quarters of the game, the team adjusted, striving to keep the ball in their possession. Senior guard Tariq Aman led Coppell’s defensive effort with several steals.

With his bold, offensive tactics, Aman ultimately scored 20 of the Cowboys’ 50 points.

“Anytime you win a game, it’s a special thing,” Schnell said. “To be 7-0, we put ourselves in a good position going into the second round of district. We’ve got a lot of work left to do, starting with Lewisville on Tuesday.”

The Cowboys play Lewisville at the CHS arena on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
