When Coppell safety Jonathan McGill took the ball 72 yards to the endzone on a punt return during the third quarter, the Coppell Cowboys football team was on its way to a 49-14 win against the Richardson Eagles.

Walking off the field, as the seniors played their final high school regular season game, but setting the momentum heading into next week’s layoff opener. The Cowboys will play Rowlett (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night at Buddy Echols Field in the Class 6A bi-district playoffs.

The victory helped the Cowboys end the regular season 9-1 overall and 7-0 in District 9-6A.

The Cowboys controlled the game from the start, with a quick touchdown catch by junior wide receiver Blake Jackson to put the Cowboys up early. The Cowboys ended the game with a touchdown pass by junior quarterback Walker Cain to finish the regular season.

The Cowboys defense showed up last night, as it was able to send continuous pressure to the play caller, resulting in five sacks and two forced fumbles. Many players on the team that do not get to play as many snaps had the opportunity to shine. The Cowboys were also able to keep the run game under check, as Richardson had less than 70 yards rushing on the night.

The Cowboys struggled on the pass protection, as the Eagles were able to send the blitz many times and get to senior quarterback Brady McBride.

“I call the pressure on the blitz, I need to stay in the pocket more and stop scrambling,” McBride said.

With good play on both sides of the ball, the team is shaping to make a big run.

“We are peaking at the right time, and we are very excited to play our first playoff game,” Coppell coach Mike Dewitt said. “The team did a great job tonight and we look to play the same throughout the playoffs.”
