The Coppell City Council discusses upcoming events in the Coppell community at its meeting on Tuesday at Town Center. The council agreed to move forward with a plan to construct a new arts center in Coppell, in addition to warning citizens about a company wrongfully claiming to represent the City of Coppell.

In 1999, Wheelice Wilson Jr. took his group of actors into an unused fire station. But Wilson’s vision continues, he will welcome Theatre Coppell’s troop of volunteer actors into a brand new facility built, not for a fire truck, but for an audience.

At Monday’s Coppell City Council meeting, the council moved to approve an agreement between the City of Coppell and Core Construction Services of Texas, Inc for the construction of the City of Coppell Arts Center. The project itself will not be approved until the budget is finalized some time in the spring.

Before consenting to the agreement, the Council listened to praise by 21year resident Garry Tenell, who thanked it for considering the new Coppell Arts Center.

“I know you all go through a heck of a lot to balance all the needs of the very diverse population here,” Tanel said. “We all have one goal, that is to continue making Coppell a comfortable place to raise a family and live here after your kids are long gone.”

Tenell is a huge fan of the existing facilities, having worked on sets at Theatre Coppell and being the father of an actor, but is looking forward to the possible changes to come.

“What you guys are considering is in line with the family based culture of our community, this is something very special for all ages,” Tenell said “A mature culture is well balanced of education, athletics, leisure and entertainment.”

City Manager Mike Land used his report time towards the end of the meeting to announce to residents that no company is representing the City of Coppell in regards to confusion over a company reaching out to citizens and trying to sell a water softener.

“There is a water company that apparently is contacting our residents saying that they’re doing so on behalf of the City of Coppell, and that is just flat out not correct,” Land said. “There is no one representing The City of Coppell that should be contacting our residents saying that.”
