Do not be everyone else, be yourself
December 2, 2015
Throughout Coppell High School you will see several things, one of them being conformity. Conforming is behaving according to social acceptable standards.
Meaning, many students dress or behave in a certain manner due to these standards.
All around the world people are being associated to social norms. Making people believe if you do not follow what society thinks is acceptable, you will be scolded.
Many of these standards coincide with the way people dress. In Coppell, the social norms for girls are big T-shirts, Nike shorts and Converse. All my life I have been told to be myself and that it is OK to be different from others.
However, in Coppell I see that people dress the same and act the same. Although we are a diverse school you cannot really see the culture within, everything appears identical.
People should express themselves without worrying about what others will think. Show off what you love, where you came from and who you are. Just, be yourself.
For a majority of my life I have moved all over Texas; attending several different schools, seeing many societal norms. After too many times trying to fit in by dressing and behaving like other people, I had an “a-ha” moment. You do not need to be like everyone else to fit in. Although it sounds cliché, it is very true. Be an individual, not everyone else.
Nonetheless, if you dress comfortably because you like to, go you. Dress the way you want for yourself, not for others. The way you dress expresses who you are and where you came from; it is part of your identity. Why hide who you are when you can express it without speaking?
Not everywhere are people allowed to dress how they want, but we are. Take advantage of your privileges and be the unique person you are.
