Football is a very serious sport, especially at Coppell, where expectations from supporters for our beloved Cowboys are very high. Football players have many responsibilities and requirements, and game day attire is one of them.
On game days, all football players from freshman team to varsity are required to wear nice slacks, a dress shirt and a tie.
This rule was put into place two years ago when Mike Dewitt became head football coach at Coppell.
“He installed the mentality that we’re going into work and this is a job that we have to do so we ought to dress like it,” sophomore JV Red offensive lineman Gunnar Osteen said. “He also thought it looked better than the jeans and jersey that football players used to wear.”
Osteen said he does not see a true preference among players regarding wearing jerseys or ties on game days. However, he prefers casual attire.
“I would prefer to wear a jersey with jeans,” Osteen said. “I’m not a huge dress clothes guy, not really a huge fan of it [but] some of the guys prefer it. They like it, but in my opinion I think we should go back to the jerseys”.
However, players aren’t the only ones who have to dress up on game days,as the coaches do as well. On varsity game days, all the coaches have to wear dress clothes just like the players.
“Coach [Scooter] Calvert, the cornerbacks coach, he does a pretty good job,” sophomore JV Red linebacker Thomas Edwards said.
Sometimes dressing up on game days can become a competition between teammates or different position groups.
When asked who dresses the best on his team sophomore kicker Sebastian Escalante said, “ Campbell Lapuma, because he is a fresh guy and always looks very nice and professional on game days”.
Often times it can be battles between position groups on which group looks the best.
When asked who looks the best on his team sophomore Thomas Edwards said, “Well, we have a lot of wide receivers that look really nice whenever they dress up”.
Although dressing up on game days can be fun for some players, get dressed often takes a long time.
When asked how long it takes him to get dressed on game days Osteen said, “not really that long, to put on everything it’s probably like 10 minutes, which is a lot longer than usual which is about 35 seconds to put on shorts and a T-shirt”. He also stated, “But it’s not really much of a hassle because we don’t have to come in for early morning practices on Thursday, so we’re not changing in the locker room so it’s not too much of an issue”.
Football players have a heavy load they have to carry juggling practice with doing homework and studying, but looking good on and off the field is never a problem with these guys.
