When thinking of pop music, one thinks of artists such as Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars. But it is only some who think of artists like Super Junior, G-Dragon or EXO.

For students at Coppell High School, they have created a Korean Pop Music Club to show that these artists are just as great as American pop artists.

Sophomore Tina Lin took K-Pop to a whole new level when she created the club to show her love and spread it even further.

“I got the idea for a K-pop club when I noticed that they had a club for Anime and Chinese, but no actual club for any Korean culture club,” Lin said.

Lin saw that many schools, including New Tech High@Coppell, had K-Pop clubs, which motivated her further.

“There was a music video I saw during the summer of seventh grade, which got me into K-Pop because of the music and the group,” Lin said.

The club’s first meeting was on Jan. 7.

“I heard the announcement during fifth period, which got my attention since I enjoy listening to K-Pop in my free time,” club member Jeff Shin said.

After a week of trying to get approval for the club, Lin also found a great sponsor for the club.

“I had [Lin] come in and ask me to sponsor the club, which I am excited to be a part of,” club sponsor Chris Caussey said.

Although when thinking about K-Pop, many only think of Psy and his song ‘Gangnam Style,’ of which Lin hopes to change.

“There are plenty more of groups that are as talented as him,” Lin said. “There is much more of K-pop than you think.”

For this reason, Lin hopes to educate the school of the culture and what K-Pop really means.

“Many people say they don’t understand or dislike [K-Pop],” Shin said. “But I think K-Pop is that type of music that can be unique unlike a lot of other [music].”
