Coming off of a huge district win against the L.D. Bell Raiders 42-3, the Coppell Cowboys football team will be looking to use that momentum against rival Southlake Carroll, who is ranked fourth in the state.
The Southlake game has been in the back of everyone’s minds ever since the new 6A districts were announced. The rivalry that used to be, is now here again. The team has to channel all the energy and momentum from the win against a team looking to put Coppell down.
“So we just had a huge win,” senior offensive lineman Glenn Williams said. “Defensively we only allowed three points, so it was a big win. So what we need to do is just build off of that. Use the energy that we just got from that win, being 1-0 in district. So we just need to be preparing again, like we did last week, and it worked well then.”
As for anything else you can do to try and prepare against a top-ranked team, the Cowboys have been preparing the best they can for the game.
“We have been practicing, but it is rivalry week,” Williams said. “We practice hard, go as hard as we can, and that is all that we can do. We just practice hard and execute, and execute everything right.”
Last week against L.D. Bell, senior running back Charles West led the Coppell offense to an explosive night, averaging 22 yards per carry with a kickoff return for a touchdown as well. Skyler Bonneau was 8 for 9 for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns. The only problem the Cowboys might run into is the Southlake defense. Against the not-so-great Bell defense, the Coppell defense did great. Hopefully the Cowboys will replicate their success against, according to the Dallas Morning News, the 17th best defense in the area.
“I’m confident in our offense, I really am,” Williams said. “I believe in my offense and I believe in my coaches and I think we’ll be prepared for anything that they will throw at our way.”
Coppell are the major underdogs, with the line 21 points in Southlakes favor. But does Williams believe that the Cowboys can pull off the upset?
“I do,” Williams said. “I have full confidence in my team and I have full confidence in my coaches, and I have full confidence that we will win.”
