DALLAS – The House of Blues in downtown Dallas is one of the classiest, well managed concert venues in the Metroplex. The old establishment’s red brick walls and bluesy indoor decor sets the perfect stage for artists of all genres.
On Friday, Christina Perri and Birdy joined together for a concert filled with gentle melodies and love songs.
Jasmine van den Bogaerde, known by her stage name of Birdy, is a 17-year-old indie artist from the United Kingdom. Listening to Birdy live is a completely different experience versus listening to her on vinyl or CD. Her mature, somber voice hypnotizes you, leaving you in awe.
Birdy’s self-titled debut album was released back in 2011, consisting of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” and the xx’s “Shelter”. The world became captivated by Birdy’s talent the moment a beautiful melody escaped her mouth. Her short 30 minute performance made for a great introduction of Christina Perri, although she has the talent to headline her own concert.
Christina Perri casually walked on stage and began to perform “Shot Me in the Heart” when she accidently asked how Austin, Texas was doing, not Dallas. An embarrassed Perri immediately apologized for messing up. She told the audience to “shoot me in the heart” in reference of the song she had just finished.
Perri’s stage presence was incredible. The way she moved across the stage giving the audience a full view of how beautifully decorated the stage was. A sheer white sheet covered hanging strands of lights to set a perfect, mystical backdrop for the night. There were also pink and purple roses wrapped around Perri’s mic stand.
Perri would tell little stories and talk to the crowd in between songs, keeping the audience engaged and entertained at all times. Her quirkiness and gentleness made the audience really appreciate her artistry.
About half way through the show, Perri called up a specific audience member on stage. Everyone was eager to see why she did so, when a man walked on stage. This man was handed a microphone where he proposed to the audience member, his girlfriend of three years.
Love was in the air. You could see the tears in the crowds eyes and feel the joy in their hearts for the newly engaged couple. Perri began to sing “A Thousand Years” a song featured in the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2” that talks about how you have loved someone and will love them for eternity.
After listening to Birdy and Perri, I wanted to frolic through fields of flowers and fall in love. It was the perfect night to really appreciate the emotion that is put behind writing songs. Not many songs are written without an emotional connection behind it or a person in mind. If you ever get the chance, attend a Birdy or Perri concert and you will be moved musically.
