Scoring in a hockey game is difficult. Scoring three unanswered goals to beat a rival in a rematch from a previous game where the other team won, is almost unheard of. Coppell is known for being unconventional in their victories and it showed last night.
“The first time [the team played Jesuit on Oct. 10] we outshot them 43-8 but lost 1-0 so that was pretty devastating,” junior forward Matt Lasky said. “Coming into this game we knew we had to outplay them. Their goalie is good and we knew we would have to get second opportunities on the rebounds.”
The Cowboys defeated the Jesuit Rangers, 4-3, last night in overtime to improve their record to 12-7 on the year and to close out the season on a victory.
Resilience is what the Cowboys exuded last night. Battling back from a 3-1 deficit coming into the third period, to tie the game up and send it to overtime, the team never lost faith in its game plan.
“We said to just keep doing what we are doing,” Lasky said. “What we were doing was working; we were just getting some bad breaks. Coming into the third we did not change anything, just worked hard, got the puck deep and got lucky a few times.”
Lasky put the game away for the Cowboys scoring the final goal in overtime with only 53 seconds remaining.
He also had an assist earlier in the game to sophomore right wing Rasmus Raikaa to end the night as the leading point getter for the team.
Junior center Scott Brownrigg added another goal, in the first period, to keep his title as leading scorer intact.
The Cowboys were also able to stay out of the penalty box most of the night with only few infractions that took out veteran leaders senior defense Jack Parker and Brownrigg for only a couple of minutes apiece.
Coppell is riding a three-game win streak going into their next matchup against a to be determined team since playoffs start Tuesday.
