It was as tough a matchup as expected when the Hebron Hawks (7-2-2) came calling at Buddy Echols Field on Saturday afternoon, but Coppell (8-1-1) was tougher.
Senior midfielder Nick Price and junior forward Colten Clark each scored a pair of goals. Juniors Stephen Tower and Austin Michaelis both added one goal each in the 6-2 victory.
Going into the game, the Cowboys were expecting a rough and tough defensive battle, and that’s exactly what the Hawks gave them. During the first 15 minutes, the ball stayed in the middle 60 yards of the field. If Price had not netted the first goal in the 23rd minute, the Cowboy offense would not have started on the roll it did for the rest of the game.
However, Coppell head coach Chad Rakestraw was disappointed that Hebron managed to score twice in the game.
“Our performance overall was not very good,” Rakestraw said after the game. “We created a lot of opportunities and scored some goals, but there’s no way we should let those two goals go in. We try to focus more on the performance more than the result, and the performance, really, was sub-par. We are looking to improve on that on Tuesday.”
Tuesday night is a new game for the Cowboys as they take their first swing at the Flower Mound Jaguars this season. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
