Just over 24 hours after former Coppell football head coach Joe McBride was formally approved by the Dripping Springs ISD Board of Trustees, the Coppell Cowboy football program promoted current defensive coordinator Mike DeWitt to head football coach on Tuesday, per Coppell ISD Athletics Director John Crawford.
Crawford also said that inside linebackers coach Kirk McBride will serve as defensive coordinator in the coming season.
Pending the approval of the hire by the CISD Board of Trustees, DeWitt will continue to uphold McBride’s defensive-minded coaching style, after the Cowboys gave nine years to two heavily offensive minds in former Brownwood High School and current Texas Longhorn football analyst Bob Shipley (coached at Coppell from 2007-2008) and current Colleyville Heritage head coach Mike Fuller (2000-2006).
The promotion of Kirk McBride also confirms that both he and offensive line coach Mike McBride will not join their brother Joe in Dripping Springs.
