I saw a goddess in the corner of my eye going towards the stage in a long black cape and I didn’t think anything of it until when the lights went low, “Mother Mary” was beginning to fill the American Airlines Center, and I saw the black cape goddess on stage in a praying position.
Needless to say, I screamed. It was finally show time.
What was supposed to take place April 16, was now Nov. 11, a date that will go down in my favorite concert history. Dallas was one of five cities that were postponed in the Diamonds World Tour this past spring due to Rihanna’s case of laryngitis.
The rescheduling of the show conflicted with the original opening act, A$AP Rocky, schedule so rapper 2 Chainz and electronic duo GTA were the supporting acts. GTA was nothing impressive, just mixing current rap songs and 2 Chainz may be no A$AP Rocky, but he didn’t fail to get the crowd pumped.
When Rihanna took the stage, it was just like “Yes, finally! This is what we’ve been waiting for.” And let me tell you it was worth the wait.
In all my concerts, I have never seen anybody perform the way she does. She is such a natural; everything she did seemed so effortless and free. If I tried to do half the things she did on a stage in heels, I’d fall on my face or probably sprain an ankle.
She started fast and furious with her more rowdy songs, and then took us on a reggae trip, then down to lovers lane where she went slow and sentimental on us when singing “Umbrella”.
And yes, I cried.
With rap stars notoriously being late to their own shows, I was a bit antsy, but the acts were all punctual and the night was perfect to a tee.
There are a lot of mixed reviews on Rihanna live. “Too raunchy” “She was late, and very unprofessional” “Not good live”. All I have to say about that is that I’d love to be in Oklahoma City tonight at the Chesapeake Arena to relive last night.e
